  1. Doesn’t it just make them feel cultured or refined or something like that, like they’ve solved the suave mysteries of life?

I think it really just highlights their “oldness” or makes them seem a little pretentious…

  2. Eh? What do you prefer? cRap music that doesn’t have any notes at all? Just “Kill muggafugga RAPE muggafugga KILL KILL muggafugga RAPE RAPE muggafugga…” over and over again? Or at least that’s the underlying message. They even had the temerity to make a song called “Fuck da Police” (Bone Thugs & Harmony) which I think is a terrible inversion of social norms. I LOVE police! I sure wish there had been some around the two ethnic apartment-thefts I had in my life. I hate to see how rap and hip-hop will evolve, probably by the time cannibalism makes a comeback because it’s a protected “lifestyle choice”.

Even yours truly has designed some jazz on this wild instrument I’m ranting about a lot lately:

  3. hmmmm…Beast is a sexy beast. How old is he? (since you referenced the jazz & age thing, although to be honest I think guys more in their 50’s start to dig the musical stylings of jazz). My dad LOVES Jazz & it is just noise to me.
Do you wish you were a flautist? hahaha

  4. raymi you have won the daily double. Make that the trifecta: dumb and opinionated and shallow. Jazz is boring? Repetitive? Um, you and
confusing yourself and jazz. You are boring. And repetitive. When you losing your training wheels you may gain some ears.

  5. I loved your interview. YAY! :-) Put on the spot but in congenial enough way not to piss him off. His answer was weak though.

  6. OK, time to engage:

Pierre… Fuck da Police was by NWA. These guys have their hand in inventing rap. That song is legendary. Bad choice. Pick on Ice T – same generation of rap and sufficiently blows enough to deserve your criticism. By the way, Lauren has great taste in music. In no way does this post make any reference to rap being a preference. Not sure where that came from. Your Korg music is interesting. Did you see how I rhymed reference and preference – that was for you. You’re welcome.

    Kris… I’m 39, and thank you!

Mingus… although I truly appreciate your moniker, I have to defend Lauren here… dumb – far far from it. Opinionated – yes, but this is a good thing. Boring – never. Training wheels – uh, wait… ya, she’ll probably like jazz one day.

Anne – ouch. Ya, I got nothin’

    One more for the haters…

  7. Jazz is musical barf. Kid’s in the Hall said it, and I agree.

Gage is still going on about old people…yawn.

Poor Gage will one day be old and is apparently not going to deal with it well.

I guess I thought like that when I was younger, but now I am okay with being old, and I will NEVER like jazz.

  8. my dad wrote his thesis on jazz music (yikes I know). i didn’t have the opportunity to read it but he left all the records he used. one of them was this guy’s below :). i never quite “got” jazz either initially, i probably still don’t, nor would i try to turn you onto it. i just wanted to share…for whatever reason i put this album on my ipod a few years ago and turned it on when i was leaving a bar at night, it was raining, and myself and the legendary horn-player had a nice time walking home. that’s my 2 cents, well that and fuck the haters. i agree with what mr. beast said.

  10. Poor Gage already IS old, older even than this supposedly old man listening to jazz and probably the oldest fucker commenting on this post.

I’m already in my 40’s and I’m dealing with it fabulously, thanks!

Jazz is something people seem to start appreciating when they get older. I think it makes men seem old. I think I am allowed to make that observation even being part of that demographic or no?

  11. Beast, don’t hate on Ice T. Sure, he’s bogus now, but everything up to and including “OG: Original Gangster” is CORE.

And jazz is kind of like bourbon. Terrible the first time you try it, but also kind of intriguing. Then after a while you can’t get enough.

  12. Re-cycled, re-enacted jazz is gross. The original stuff was never boring. Watch that Ken Burns documentary on the music. Taken in context, it is thrilling, God’s own music. What is boring is even having to make this point. Good Christ, why even bother. Name any Jazz icon. Bix Beiderbecke was boring. John Coltrane was boring. Miles Davis. The music is alive. Jazz snobs are boring. Getting a college degree in Jazz is boring. Jazz is instrument porn for musicians. Jazz is beautiful. The Golden Era of Jazz is dead. But the idea of Jazz will never die. Jazz is as boring as the musicians who play it. Casual across the board dismissal of things you don’t like or understand is boring. Cool people are boring

  13. Fuck. Meant to write: “Bix Beiderbecke was not boring. John Coltrane was not boring. Miles Davis.” Typos are boring. Internet commenting: wicked fucking boring

  14. Well Gage, you look really good for being in your forties!

And don’t take anything I post too seriously on here after midnight because I may have had a Stella or two. ;)

    Love currently sober old Binsk.

  15. Harrumph. I love jazz, and am a 27 year old woman, but I do not deny that I am probably boring and have old-person tastes. However, I love it enough to own up to what other people think it says about me, and you can pry my Avishai Cohen album collection out of my cold dead hands someday. (Boring? Not this dude.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CjLUwmzYwM)
