Goat detained over armed robbery
LAGOS (Reuters) – Police in Nigeria are holding a goat on suspicion of attempted armed robbery.
Vigilantes took the black and white beast to the police saying it was an armed robber who had used black magic to transform himself into a goat to escape arrest after trying to steal a Mazda 323.
“The group of vigilante men came to report that while they were on patrol they saw some hoodlums attempting to rob a car. They pursued them. However one of them escaped while the other turned into a goat,” Kwara state police spokesman Tunde Mohammed told Reuters by telephone.
“We cannot confirm the story, but the goat is in our custody. We cannot base our information on something mystical. It is something that has to be proved scientifically, that a human being turned into a goat,” he said.
Belief in witchcraft is widespread in parts of Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation. Residents came to the police station to see the goat, photographed in one national newspaper on its knees next to a pile of straw.

Hi raymi, i follow your blog and love it. i grew up in africa, and witchcraft is in many ways the same as other indigeonous religions. i know that you probably didn;t intend it – and maybe i’m jsut being to sensitive – but it feels as though you’re being flippant and dismissive. i don’t know, but these ideas about africa that get disseminated do a lot of damage – i’m not saying that their aren’t sick things about africa (raping virgins) but no more than any other country (war in iraq). its just that when people read it they believe it and aligning african generally with disease ridden rapist sucks for the rest of us africans. anyway, now that i’ve been a downer, i do enjoy your blog and hope 09 brings you good things.

yes, you are being sensitive and reading into it too much. it’s a funny news story, don’t use it as a soundboard to speak up about every single thing that is wrong with this planet. because you grew up there you are hyper-sensitive to embarrassing stories such as this, obviously. i’m not knocking anything here other than laughing at a ridiculous story. what is the point you were trying to make other than you wanted to share that you grew up in africa? i’m not being mean, it’s just a blog post and i think the story is cute and naive.
raymi, i belive i respectfully gave an opinion on your post, which i beleive is what comments are for. i did not attack you in any way. but what i did recieve was a forcefull and defensive response. you should know that what you said could be construed by many as racist. i’m not say that you are. i’m just saying that i commented nicely on something that spoke to me and got a kick back for it. people read your blog, and what you say can be influential, that is the only reason i bothered to say anything, i couldn’t care less where you think i’m from.

is it humorous that some believe that raping babies will cure them of hiv? no i don’t think its *the* goat, i’m asuming its just some stock image goat, but on that link i posted there is a stubby little thing looking all surprised… if a goat can actually look surprised.
